Mission
Our Mission
Background
Where we started
Thailand has a large, economically significant maritime industry, but its ability to develop maritime technology in-house is still weak — even though researchers in this field already exist across universities, labs, and organizations, just not yet connected systematically.
Scattered talent
Researchers work in isolation — people with complementary expertise rarely collaborate.
Scattered knowledge
Knowledge and technology never accumulate into a shared national capability.
Research-to-practice gap
Most research stops at papers or simulations, rarely reaching prototypes or real use.
Brain drain
Talented researchers move abroad because the ecosystem and career path at home aren’t there yet.
Loss of IP
Thailand risks losing people, knowledge, and IP all at once.
We want to unite the people who are scattered, to build Thailand’s maritime-technology capability together — this is why the Maritime Technology Research Community exists.
Vision
“To drive and strengthen an ecosystem that enables Thailand to develop and own its maritime innovation and technology.”
What “own” means
Not just using technology brought in from abroad, but having the full capability to:
- Research — set the questions and do the work ourselves
- Develop — turn knowledge into technology
- Engineer — real engineering design
- Build — build and assemble the system ourselves
- Own IP — keep the IP in Thailand
- Validate — test and prove performance
- Commercialize — bring it to market
More than a research community
The goal is a complete, end-to-end maritime-technology ecosystem — a paper is never the destination, just one step toward building technology.
Mission
Our Mission
M1
Unite scattered people into one network
Connect researchers, engineers, students, and maritime-tech specialists across universities, labs, and organizations so they work together systematically.
M2
Turn individual capability into collective capability
Maritime technology is complex and multidisciplinary — no one person can master it all. We combine different expertise to build what one person alone cannot.
M3
Turn research into real, working technology
Push work from papers and simulations toward prototypes, lab validation, and field testing — aiming for real operational technology.
M4
Connect research with industry
Bring real industry problems into the research process, and send finished technology back out into real use — so the ecosystem keeps growing.
M5
Build a career path to keep talent in Thailand
Create a new career path for people who want to build technology in Thailand — reducing brain drain and keeping people, knowledge, and IP at home.
Philosophy & Values
Our DNA
Build what Thailand doesn’t yet have — not just study or copy foreign technology, but create our own.
Bring together different people, knowledge, data, software, hardware, labs, networks, and experience into a capability bigger than any one member.
“I have this problem — but I no longer have to solve it alone.”
If one person has research, another has engineering, another has industry connections, another has hardware, and another has AI — together they can assemble one technology. This is the core reason the community exists.
Example: building a single Autonomous Vessel system already needs many disciplines at once —
No single member needs to know everything — together, we build what one person alone cannot.
Scope
The scope of Maritime Technology
We don’t limit ourselves to one slice of technology — maritime technology is inherently multidisciplinary. What matters isn’t which domain someone belongs to, but cross-domain collaboration.
